Boiler making a banging noise? What kettling means

A boiler should hum along quietly in the background. When it starts banging, whistling or gurgling, it is trying to tell you something. Here is how to read the noises.

Banging or rumbling (kettling)

This is the classic one. Kettling happens when limescale or sludge builds up on the heat exchanger, trapping heat so water overheats and rumbles like a boiling kettle. It is more common in hard-water areas and in older systems. A power flush to clear the sludge often sorts it, and a system filter helps stop it coming back.

Whistling

Usually trapped air or, again, limescale. Bleeding your radiators can release trapped air and is a safe job to do yourself. The Energy Saving Trust has good plain-English guidance on getting your heating running efficiently.

Gurgling

Often air in the system or low pressure. If it comes with dropping pressure, read our guide on why your boiler keeps losing pressure.

Tapping or clicking

Sometimes just pipes expanding, sometimes a failing part. If it is persistent, have it looked at by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Should you repair or replace?

If your boiler is newer, a flush or a small repair usually does the trick. If it is over 10 years old and getting noisy, it is often a sign the system is tired. Reviewers like Which? rate the most reliable models, and our own signs you need a new boiler guide will help you decide.

Frequently asked questions

What is boiler kettling?+

Kettling is the banging or rumbling sound a boiler makes when limescale or sludge builds up on the heat exchanger. It traps heat, water overheats and it sounds like a kettle boiling.

Is a noisy boiler dangerous?+

A noise on its own is rarely an immediate danger, but it means your boiler is working harder and less efficiently. It is worth getting it checked before it turns into a bigger repair.

Can a power flush fix a noisy boiler?+

Often yes. A power flush clears sludge from the system and can quieten kettling. If the boiler is old, though, a replacement may be the better value fix.
