Boiler Display Blank or Not Lighting Up? What to Check

There's nothing quite like walking into a cold house and finding your boiler's display screen completely blank. No clock, no error code, no glowing dial, nothing at all. Before you assume the worst, a blank boiler display is often one of the simpler faults to sort out, and in many cases you can work out what's wrong yourself in a few minutes.

This guide walks through the usual suspects in order, starting with the quickest checks first.

Check the power supply first

It sounds obvious, but a huge number of "broken boiler" callouts turn out to be a power problem rather than a boiler fault.

• Check the fused spur switch near the boiler (often on the wall just below or beside it) is switched on.
• Check the fuse inside that spur hasn't blown. A 3-amp fuse is standard on most systems.
• Check the main consumer unit (fuse box) for a tripped switch, especially if other appliances have also lost power.
• If you're on a smart meter or prepayment tariff, confirm you haven't simply run out of credit.

If the display comes back once power is restored, you're done. If it's still blank, move on.

Look for a tripped RCD or recent power cut

Boilers are sensitive to power interruptions. A brief outage, a storm, or someone resetting the electrics elsewhere in the house can knock the boiler's display out even when nothing is actually broken.

Try switching the boiler off at the isolation switch, waiting 60 seconds, then switching back on. Many modern boilers, including current Worcester Bosch and Vaillant models, need this kind of manual reset after a power interruption before the display will wake up again.

Check the pressure gauge

Low system pressure won't always blank the display outright, but on some models it can prevent the unit from firing up at all, which looks the same from the outside. If the pressure gauge needle sits below 1 bar, that's your likely cause.

Rule out a PCB or component fault

If power is confirmed, the reset has been tried, and pressure is fine, the issue is likely internal, most commonly the printed circuit board (PCB), a failed display screen, or a wiring fault behind the front panel. These aren't DIY jobs. Opening the casing on a gas appliance without the right training is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer only, both for safety and because it can invalidate your warranty. You can check any engineer's licence on the Gas Safe Register before they start work.

When it's time to call someone

Book an engineer if:

• The display stays blank after a reset, fuse check and power confirmation.
• You smell gas or hear unusual noises alongside the fault (our banging noise guide covers that separately).
• The boiler is over 10 to 12 years old, in which case this could be one of several signs you need a new boiler rather than a one-off repair.

If it turns out to be time for a replacement

Sometimes a dead display is the final sign of a boiler on its way out rather than a fixable glitch. If a replacement makes more sense than another repair, it's worth comparing options properly.
