A boiler that feels dangerously hot, keeps cutting out, or shows an overheating fault code is not something to leave until the weekend. It usually means the boiler's safety system has detected a problem and shut itself down before things got worse. That is the good news, it is doing its job. The bad news is you now need to work out why it happened and get it sorted properly.

What "overheating" actually means

Most modern boilers are designed to run at a set flow temperature, typically around 60 to 80°C depending on settings. When the internal thermostat or sensor detects the water going well above this, the boiler locks out and displays a fault code rather than risk damage or a safety issue. You might notice:

  • The boiler cutting out repeatedly, especially under load
  • Radiators that feel scalding at the top but cold lower down

Common causes of boiler overheating

Poor water flow. If water cannot circulate properly, it heats up faster than it can be pumped away. This is often down to a faulty pump, a stuck valve, or a blocked pipe.

Sludge and limescale build-up. Debris inside the heat exchanger or pipework restricts flow and creates hot spots. This is one of the main reasons annual servicing matters, a service catches sludge before it becomes a shutdown.

Faulty thermostat or sensor. Sometimes the boiler is not actually overheating, the sensor reading it is wrong. This tends to affect older or heavily used units.

Trapped air in radiators. Airlocks reduce circulation in the same way sludge does. If radiators are cold at the top, try bleeding them before assuming the fault is in the boiler itself.

Ageing components. Heat exchangers and pumps wear out. If your boiler is over 10 to 12 years old and overheating has become a repeat problem, it may be cheaper long term to look at signs you need a new boiler rather than keep repairing it.

What to do right now

If your boiler is overheating or has locked out:

  1. Turn it off at the boiler and isolate it if you can do so safely.
  2. Check the pressure gauge, most systems should read between 1 and 1.5 bar when cold.

  4. If you smell burning, see visible damage, or the boiler has been making a loud banging noise, treat it as an emergency and get emergency help rather than waiting.

Is it dangerous if my boiler is overheating?+

The boiler's safety cut-out is designed to prevent danger, so a lockout itself is a protective response, not a crisis. However, burning smells, visible scorching, or a boiler that will not stop overheating should be treated as urgent and checked by a Gas Safe engineer straight away.
