Boiler Warranties Explained: What's Actually Covered
A clear guide to boiler warranties in the UK, what they cover, how long they last, and the small print that catches people out.
Buying a new boiler is a big enough decision without trying to decode warranty jargon at the same time. "Up to 12 years" sounds great on a leaflet, but what does it actually cover, and what could void it the moment something goes wrong? Understanding boiler warranties properly, before you sign anything, saves a lot of grief later.
What a boiler warranty actually covers
A boiler warranty is a manufacturer's promise to repair or replace parts that fail due to a manufacturing fault, for a set number of years. It's not the same as insurance and it won't cover everything.
Typically included:
- Parts and labour for manufacturing defects
- Major components such as the heat exchanger, fan, and PCB
- Call-out costs from an approved engineer, in most cases
Usually excluded:
- General wear and tear
- Damage from low water pressure or sludge build-up (see our pressure guide if this sounds familiar)
- Faults caused by anyone other than a Gas Safe registered engineer working on the boiler
- Missed annual services

How long do boiler warranties last?
Warranty length varies by brand, model, and how the boiler is installed. As a rough guide across the market:
- Budget or entry-level models: 2 to 5 years
- Mid-range combi boilers: 5 to 8 years
- Premium models installed by an accredited installer: 10 to 12 years, sometimes longer
The longer warranties almost always depend on the boiler being installed and registered by an installer approved by that manufacturer, and being serviced annually from day one. If you're comparing brands, our best boiler brands compared guide breaks down typical warranty lengths from Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal, and Baxi. If you're torn between two market leaders specifically, see Worcester Bosch vs Vaillant.
What can void your warranty
This is where people get caught out. Common reasons a claim gets rejected:
- No proof of annual servicing (keep every receipt)
- Installation by someone not Gas Safe registered, which is also illegal for domestic gas work under Gas Safe Register
- Wrong boiler size for the property, which strains components. Check our what size boiler do I need guide before buying
- Failing to fit a filter or use inhibitor as specified
- Moving house without transferring the warranty (some are transferable, some aren't)
A banging noise, a sudden pressure drop, or a boiler that won't fire are all worth investigating early rather than waiting. Our guides on boiler making banging noise and how often should a boiler be serviced explain what's normal and what isn't.
Does a longer warranty always mean a better boiler?
Not necessarily. A 12-year warranty on an oversized or badly installed boiler is worth less than a 7-year warranty on the right unit, correctly sized and commissioned. The Energy Saving Trust points out that correct sizing and installation quality affect both efficiency and longevity far more than the badge on the front.
Installation quality is also why warranty length varies between installers even for the same boiler. Manufacturers reward accredited installers with longer cover because they trust the workmanship. It's worth asking directly what warranty length you'll get before booking any installer.
Getting the right cover from day one
If you're weighing up a combi vs system vs regular boiler, factor warranty length into the total cost picture alongside the price itself. Our new boiler cost guide shows how upfront price and warranty length often move together, and boiler finance explained covers spreading the cost if needed.
Norvera works with Gas Safe registered engineers across the Midlands and every installation is registered properly with the manufacturer, so your warranty is valid from the first day. Check areas we cover or get a fixed price to start.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to service my boiler every year to keep the warranty valid?+
Yes, almost all manufacturer warranties require an annual service from a Gas Safe registered engineer, with proof kept for every year of cover.
Can I transfer a boiler warranty if I sell my house?+
Some manufacturers allow this and some don't. Check the specific terms for your model, and register the transfer with the manufacturer if it's allowed.
Is a boiler warranty the same as boiler insurance?+
No. A warranty covers manufacturing faults on the unit itself. Insurance or cover plans can include things like accidental damage, callouts for any fault, and central heating breakdowns more broadly.
What happens if my installer wasn't Gas Safe registered?+
The warranty is likely to be void, and the installation itself is illegal under UK law. Always check an installer's Gas Safe Register number before work starts.
