How to Repressurise a Boiler: Step-by-Step Guide

Check the Pressure Gauge First
Every combi boiler has a pressure gauge, either a physical dial or a digital readout. Normal operating pressure is usually between 1 and 1.5 bar when the heating is off and cold. If the needle is sitting below 1, or you're seeing an "F1" or low pressure fault code, that's your answer.

Find the Filling Loop
The filling loop is a small flexible hose, usually silver or grey, that connects the boiler's water inlet to the central heating pipework, with a valve or lever at each end. On most boilers it sits underneath the unit. Some newer models, including several Worcester Bosch and Vaillant boilers, have an internal filling key or a simple button instead of an external hose, so check your manual if you can't see one.
Step by Step: Repressurising
- Turn off the boiler and let it cool down if it's been running.
- Locate the filling loop and make sure both valve ends are closed.
- Attach the loop if it's detachable, making sure it clicks securely into place at both ends.
- Slowly open one valve, then the other. You'll hear water starting to flow.
- Watch the gauge climb. Stop as soon as it reaches between 1 and 1.5 bar, ideally around 1.3.
- Close both valves fully and detach the loop if it's removable.
- Turn the boiler back on and reset it if needed. The pressure may settle slightly once the system is running.
